What are you replacing: the Claude model or the Claude Code tool?
Claude may cost too much at your volume, you may be unable to open an Anthropic account from your country, or you may just want to compare first. All fair. But "alternative to Claude" and "alternative to Claude Code" are different searches. The first is about the model: how it answers, writes code and follows instructions. The second is about the tool: terminal or IDE, repository access, how edits get approved. The two swap independently. Run Claude Code with another model, or Cursor with Claude. Split the question in half and the comparison becomes a check of your workflow instead of an argument about brand names.

The table does not rank products. Tariffs and availability change, so read the vendor docs before you adopt anything. Head-to-heads, one pair at a time: Claude vs Gemini, GPT vs Claude coding agents and Claude vs Qwen.
How to compare models on your own tasks
Five identical tasks tell you more than ten review videos. Take work your team repeats weekly: fixing a test, analyzing an incident, drafting a customer reply, reviewing a pull request, generating a migration. Strip out sensitive data or use an approved environment. Compare Claude, GPT, Gemini, Qwen and DeepSeek on answer format, handling of your context, cost and time. For code, add the patch, the tests, the explanation of changes and repeatability. For access from Russia, compare an API provider, your own infrastructure and the official service on terms, protocols, payment and logging.
Record four things per run: the request, the answer, the diff, and the time to a verifiable result. A model that asks a clarifying question has not failed, because that can cost less than a confident wrong edit. Run it twice. An agent that solved the task once is not yet a team tool.

Claude Code alternatives
Claude Code is a terminal-first agent. If you want the same workflow with a different tool, or a different model under the hood, these are the contenders.
| Tool | Interface | Model flexibility | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor | IDE (VS Code fork) | Many models | Inline editing + agents in one editor |
| Windsurf | IDE | Many models | Flow-based agentic editing |
| Codex CLI | Terminal | OpenAI-centric | Terminal coding in the OpenAI stack |
| Cline | VS Code extension | BYO any model | Agentic edits without leaving VS Code |
| Aider | Terminal | BYO any model | Git-native pair programming |
| OpenCode | Terminal | BYO any model | Open-source Claude Code analog |
| gemini-cli | Terminal | Gemini | Free terminal agent from Google |
| Qwen Code | Terminal | Qwen | Open-stack terminal coding |
"BYO" means bring your own key: the tool is free and you pay for the model API. Judge a tool by three everyday questions, not by its demo:
- Can you limit the agent to certain files and commands?
- Is the diff visible before changes apply?
- Does a failed patch roll back without manual cleanup?
Cursor is the most popular IDE option, though under heavy use a subscription can outrun pay-per-token billing (Claude Code vs Cursor). gemini-cli and Qwen Code are solid but trail Claude Code on long agentic loops. For a broader look, see the AI coding agents comparison and the AI review pipeline.
Free, Russian and Chinese options
"Free" usually means a rate-limited tier, a web chat, or self-hosted open weights, which cost hardware instead of API fees. The Gemini free tier and the free gemini-cli are the most usable route. Qwen and DeepSeek web chats are free, while their APIs are cheap, not free. Aider, Cline, OpenCode and Qwen Code are free software and Cursor has a free tier, but the model API you plug in gets billed. A fully free, frontier-quality, zero-effort Claude replacement does not exist.
GigaChat (Sber) and YandexGPT are the serious domestic models. GigaChat is strong on Russian language, RU hosting and compliance, and weaker on complex coding. YandexGPT fits Yandex Cloud and Russian text, and is limited for agentic dev work. They answer the "Russian analogue of Claude" search when local hosting comes first, but they do not replace Claude's coding.
Qwen (Alibaba) and DeepSeek are the "Chinese analogue of Claude": open-weight, cheap and good at code. Qwen has the broader tooling, DeepSeek wins on raw cost.
When you need Claude itself: one API, one key
If the comparison ends with "I want Claude", the question becomes how to reach Claude from Russia without an Anthropic account or a VPN. One key also helps a team: support can run on one model, code generation on another, with a fallback ready. codexkey routes you to the real Claude models. The catalog has Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5, Claude Fable, GPT 5.6 Luna (gpt-5.6-luna), GPT 5.6 Sol, GPT 5.6 Terra, GPT 6 Luna, GPT 6 Sol and GPT 6.1 Sol. Results differ between families, so move your prompts and test set along with the integration.
- Pay-per-token from $0.33 / 1M, no subscription.
- Pay with SBP (the Russian Faster Payments System), Russian cards, crypto, or MTS (the Russian mobile operator).
- Works with Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode and any SDK. Change two settings:
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.codexkey.online
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk_cdx_your_key_here
Before rollout, check the base URL, authorization format, streaming and error handling. If a free Gemini tier or self-hosted Qwen covers your needs, use them. A gateway makes sense when the answer is specifically Claude, and then the quickstart and pricing take minutes. Related: Codex in Russia and the no-fine-tune Claude alternative. If "Claude" is only a preference, the alternatives are excellent and often cheaper. If it is a hard requirement, skip the substitutes.
How to run a pilot without risk
Do not move the whole production flow at once. Pick one internal process and leave the final word to a person: drafting a support reply, finding why a test fails, a first review of a small change. Set the success criterion first. For support, that is an answer in the right format that leaks no data. For development, a green test and a clean diff. For review, a found problem with a reproducible explanation.
FAQ
What is the best alternative to Claude?
It depends on your task. Run the same working prompts through Claude, GPT, Gemini, Qwen and DeepSeek, then compare answers, diffs and real cost.
What is the best free alternative to Claude?
The Gemini free tier: strong quality, a large context and a free gemini-cli. For open weights you control, Qwen or DeepSeek.
What can replace Claude Code?
In the terminal, try Codex CLI, Aider or OpenCode. In an editor, Cline or Cursor.
Is there a free alternative to Claude Code?
Yes: Aider, Cline, OpenCode and Qwen Code are free, and gemini-cli is free to start. You pay only for the model API you connect.
What is the best Chinese alternative to Claude?
Qwen and DeepSeek. Both are open-weight and strong at coding. Qwen has wider tooling, DeepSeek is cheaper per token.
Is there a Russian alternative to Claude?
GigaChat (Sber) and YandexGPT. Pick them for Russian text and compliance, not for heavy agentic development.
Can I use Claude itself from Russia without an account or VPN?
Yes. codexkey routes you to the real Claude models, billed per token, and works with Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode and any SDK. Questions? Telegram: https://t.me/codex_key.
Can I connect several models through one API?
Yes, if the provider supports the models and request format. In codexkey the Claude and GPT families from the current catalog are available.
Where should a team start?
With one safe scenario: save the original request and compare several runs. The model that wins on your work beats any place in someone else's ranking.
