Error 529 means Anthropic's servers cannot keep up with the stream of requests at this moment and are temporarily turning new ones away. Your internet, your account and the text of your message are not to blame. The best move is to wait a few seconds and send the request again. In the vast majority of cases Claude answers as usual on the second or third try.
What error 529 means in Claude
Anthropic calls this status "Overloaded". It appears when the combined load on Claude's servers is higher than they are ready to take. It says nothing about the quality of your request or the state of your account: this is an infrastructure matter on Anthropic's side, not yours.
In a browser on claude.ai the error usually shows up as a short message under the input box, along the lines of "Claude is currently overloaded", or names code 529 outright. In Claude Code the same thing looks like a response cut off in the middle of the agent's work, with the error text in the terminal.
Why it happens to you in particular
As a rule it is not to you in particular but to everyone at once. Anthropic's load peaks fall on US working hours (evening in Moscow), on the weekends after a new model comes out, and on the first days after loud announcements, when the number of new users jumps. If 529 caught you at such a time, you simply landed in a general spike, and the system did not single you out.
There is a second scenario, rarer: you send requests too often, for example from a script or an agent with no pauses between calls. Then it makes sense to add a pause between retries yourself, so you do not make an already heavy moment worse.
What to do right now
- Wait 10-30 seconds. Most overloads are short, and a retry half a minute later often goes through without trouble.
- Retry the request unchanged: the content of the message has nothing to do with it, so there is no need to rewrite it.
- Do not hit send over and over without pauses. A burst of quick retries adds load and does not speed up the answer.
- If the error lasts longer than a few minutes, check the Anthropic status page: it shows whether a major outage is under way.
- Try another model if your interface offers a choice: sometimes one model is overloaded rather than the whole platform, and switching clears the error at once.
If you work in Claude Code and the error cut the agent off in the middle of a task, repeat the command or ask the agent to continue: the task context is usually kept, and the work does not start from zero.
If 529 keeps coming back
A single 529 every few days is the ordinary life of any popular API, and there is nothing to worry about. It is another matter when it interferes regularly: several times a day, at important moments, when waiting is inconvenient. Two cases need to be told apart.
An ordinary claude.ai user has few options: wait, try again or, if the problems are constant, write to Anthropic support and say when the error happens most often.
A developer who calls Claude through the API from code or agents has more levers: a properly configured retry with a delay sharply cuts how visible such errors are to the users of your product. A detailed walkthrough with ready code in Python and TypeScript is in the article Claude API errors: fixing 529 Overloaded, 500, 429 and 400. It also covers the neighboring errors 500, 503, 429 and 400, in case your logs show something similar but not 529.
How to stop depending on one overloaded entry point
A caveat up front: no gateway, codexkey included, removes Anthropic server overload as a phenomenon. The request still passes through the infrastructure that serves Claude models, and a load spike can hit any client of any provider. The difference lies in how quickly the system recovers and whether a fallback path exists when the main one is jammed.
codexkey works as a gateway to Claude models (Sonnet, Opus) with routing across several channels and automatic server-side retry on short failures. For a developer that means less manual work on retries, since part of the logic is already built into the gateway. For anyone who just sits in Claude Code or runs their own script, the difference shows as rarer interruptions, not as their complete disappearance. That is an honest caveat, not an advertising promise.
Connecting takes changing one line in code or the ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL environment variable:
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://api.codexkey.online"
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk_cdx_YOUR_KEY"
Registration and the first key take about a minute, and top-ups start at $1. Installing Claude Code on Windows, macOS and Linux is covered step by step in Claude Code in Russia in 2026, and model rates and payment methods are on the pricing page.
FAQ
Is a 529 an error on my side?
No. Code 529 always means overload on the side of Anthropic's servers. Checking your internet, updating the browser or reinstalling Claude Code is pointless: only one thing helps, which is to wait and repeat the request.
How long does an overload usually last?
In the vast majority of cases from a few seconds to a few minutes. Long overloads of tens of minutes are rare and usually coincide with major infrastructure outages, which show on Anthropic's status page.
Does refreshing the page help?
Refreshing claude.ai fixes nothing by itself. But the next send after the refresh is a retry, so it helps indirectly, in the same way as simply waiting and trying again.
How is a 529 different from nothing happening at all?
If Claude does not answer at all and shows no error, the cause is most likely the network on your side or a browser glitch. A 529 always arrives with explicit error text or a status code. A blank screen with no message means a different cause.
Should I switch to another AI provider because of occasional 529s?
If the error does not interfere regularly, there is no need to change anything: it is an ordinary trait of a busy public API, not a sign that the service is degrading. When 529 has become a daily problem for your work specifically, developers should look at gateways with a fallback between providers rather than changing the model altogether: the quality of Claude's answers does not suffer.
