Anthropic charges for Claude in three ways: Claude Pro ($20 a month), Claude Max ($100 or $200 a month, depending on the tier) and a pay-as-you-go API. From Russia none can be bought directly: Russian cards are declined, and sign-up from a Russian IP gets blocked. codexkey offers the pay-per-token route, which in practice costs several times less than a subscription. Below are the numbers for a month of active development.
The plans in one table
| Plan | Price | Limits | Best for | Worst for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20/mo | ~45 messages per 5 h, 5× Free | Chat, research, writing | Coding on Opus, long sessions |
| Claude Max | $200/mo | 5-20× Pro, priority on Opus 4.8 | Heavy daily coding in chat | Irregular use |
| Claude API | pay as you go | $3/M input, $15/M output (Sonnet) | Development, scripts, agents, production | Short chats without an SDK |
| API + codexkey | same per-token prices | + SBP and Russian cards, key in 60 seconds | Any API workflow from Russia | Pointless if a foreign card already works with Anthropic |
What each plan buys
Claude Pro, $20 a month. Claude in the browser and the desktop app, with roughly 45 Sonnet messages per 5-hour window and about 5 on Opus. It suits Claude as a conversation partner: talking through a task, checking a text, drafting a letter. For IDE work and agents the limits are too tight.
Claude Max, $100 or $200 a month. The 5x tier costs 100 dollars and the 20x tier 200 dollars (prices at the time of writing, per claude.com/pricing). Both bring priority Claude Code access in the browser and long Opus sessions. It works for someone in Claude Code six hours a day, and costs too much once activity drops.
Claude API, pay as you go. You pay per million input and output tokens on each model. No message caps, no five-hour windows, and agents can run around the clock. The bill equals what you consumed.
Worked numbers for three workloads
Take a backend developer on Python or TypeScript who uses Claude Code daily.
Workload 1: light use
10-15 PRs a week, mostly small refactors and bug fixes. Sonnet 4.6 is the default, and Opus takes about 10% of tasks.
- Monthly tokens: ~5M input (about 1.5M effective with caching), ~600K output.
- Through the API: Sonnet 4.6 about $4-6, Opus 4.8 about $1-2. Total around $7 a month.
- Claude Pro ($20): the Opus cap runs out 4-5 times a week.
- Claude Max ($200): you overpay 28 times over.
Workload 2: active development
30-50 PRs a week, agent pipelines, lots of Sonnet calls and regular large Opus refactors.
- Monthly tokens: ~25M input (about 6M with caching), ~3M output.
- Through the API: Sonnet 4.6 about $25, Opus 4.8 about $15-20. Total $40-50 a month.
- Claude Pro ($20): you hit the Sonnet cap daily.
- Claude Max ($200): no caps, but you overpay 4-5 times.
Workload 3: a team of 5 developers
All five use Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.8, about 30 PRs a week each.
- API per developer: ~$40-50 a month.
- Claude Max ×5: $1000 a month.
- API through codexkey: about $250 a month for the whole team (with prompt caching and a shared balance).
The team saves $750 a month, or $9,000 a year: roughly one more junior engineer.
Why the API through codexkey is cheaper still
codexkey forwards cache_control headers unchanged. Claude Code and any agent with prompt caching cache the system prompt, instructions and part of the context for an hour, and re-reading those tokens is billed at 0.10x the standard rate.
On real backend workloads, prompt caching cuts the input-token bill by 60-80%. Without it Sonnet 4.6 in the active workload would cost about $80 a month; with it, $25. Pro and Max offer no control over caching: it is a black box with a fixed allowance.
When a subscription still wins
Claude Pro makes sense if:
- You mostly use Claude in the browser for conversation, document review and copywriting, without Claude Code or agents.
- You need synchronous chat with Projects and long saved sessions.
- Your monthly API spend on chat would pass $25-30. That is rare: chat usually costs $3-7 a month on the API.
Claude Max makes sense if:
- You spend 6+ hours a day in Claude Code and regularly hit Opus limits.
- You need priority access during peak load on Anthropic's servers.
- You will pay extra for a fixed bill with no month-end surprises.
In every other case the API is cheaper, often by a wide margin.
Claude Pro subscription in Russia: why you cannot buy it directly
"Claude pro subscription russia" is searched so often because a direct purchase does not work. Anthropic accepts cards from a limited list of countries, a Russian card is declined at payment, and sign-up from a Russian IP can be blocked too. A VPN solves half of it (you can get in), but the card still fails.
Middlemen sell subscriptions, but with a markup and often on a shared or someone else's account that may get banned. Unless you specifically need browser chat and Projects, paying per token is safer and cheaper. A full breakdown of Pro, Max and Team without the Russia angle is in Claude Pro, Max or API: what costs a developer less.
How to get Claude from Russia without a subscription
codexkey cuts the chain down to four steps:
- Sign up on the registration page: email, no card at the start.
- Top up the balance with SBP, a Russian card, an MTS wallet, YooKassa, Platega or crypto.
- Create an API key (
sk_cdx_…): a name, the Premium or Cheap channel, an optional Premium fallback for Cheap, an expiry. - Connect Claude Code, Cursor or your own scripts through
ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.codexkey.online.
No Anthropic account, no VPN, no virtual cards. Top-ups start from one dollar: put in 200 rubles and try it.
FAQ
Does a Claude Pro subscription work in Russia?
No, a direct payment is declined. Middlemen sell it with a markup, usually $35-50 a month, the same as six months of active API use.
Which is better value: Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus?
If you only need chat, both cost about $20 a month. For development the API is several times cheaper than either.
How do I estimate token cost before paying?
The codexkey dashboard has a calculator and per-model history. Every Anthropic SDK response also carries a usage block you can log and project from.
Does the balance expire?
No. A codexkey balance has no expiry date, and the money stays until you spend it.
Can I combine a subscription and the API?
Yes. Keep Claude Pro for browser chat and use named codexkey keys for everything else. Spend is visible per key; per-key spending caps cannot be set through the API.
Is a Claude Max subscription also unavailable in Russia?
Yes, for the same reason as Pro: a Russian card does not clear payment at Anthropic. For heavy daily work in Claude Code, compare Max ($100-200 a month) with a per-token bill through codexkey. In most scenarios the API is cheaper.
