GPT-6 Astra has no free tier. On Free and Go, Codex gives you GPT-6 Luna and nothing more. Astra starts with the paid plans, the cheapest being Plus at $20 a month. You can buy it two ways: a ChatGPT subscription, or tokens through the API. From Russia a subscription runs into the list of countries where OpenAI operates, so for code and applications paying per token is the simpler route.
GPT-6 for free: what you get without paying
A free GPT-6 exists, but it is not Astra. According to the Codex pricing page, Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, marked as rolling out gradually. OpenAI positions Luna for narrow, high-volume jobs rather than hard engineering work. The English search "gpt 6 free" lands on the same answer: Luna is free, Astra is not.
Plain ChatGPT is less clear-cut. OpenAI's help pages and the press name the models for free accounts differently, and the rollout is staged. Trust the model picker in your own account, not news headlines. On the API pricing page every GPT-6 model has a per-token price. There is no free tier there.
What the ChatGPT plans include
Data from the Codex pricing page, 29 October 2026:
| Plan | Price per month | GPT-6 in Codex |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app |
| Go | $8 | GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app |
| Plus | $20 | GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6.1 Terra, Astra with an estimate of 5-45 local messages per five hours |
| Pro | from $100 (tiers $100, $200, $500) | everything in Plus, the five-hour limit does not apply |
| Business | $20 per user on an annual contract, $25 month to month | same models as Plus for the standard plan |
For comparison, on Plus GPT-6 Luna is rated at 350-3000 messages over the same five hours. A gap of almost seventy times shows what the plans are built for: Astra is kept for rare, heavy tasks, and Luna is meant for the steady stream.
Download GPT-6 Astra: what you can actually download
You cannot download the model. GPT-6 runs on OpenAI servers and has no installer or apk. A search for "download gpt 6" usually means one of three things:
- The ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI's instructions point to chatgpt.com/download for macOS and Windows, with a separate guide for Linux. Inside the app you switch between ChatGPT and Codex modes.
- Codex CLI, the console agent. You install it with
npm install -g @openai/codexor with the script on OpenAI's site. A step-by-step walkthrough is in Download Codex: desktop app, CLI, VS Code. - The mobile app. Take it only from the official stores.
The warning about fakes is not a formality. In August 2026 PhishFort described a campaign: an ad on the query "codex mac download" led to a shared chat on the real chatgpt.com domain, where users were told to paste a command with a base64 string into Terminal. That installed the MacSync stealer on the Mac, which takes passwords and Keychain data. The rule is simple: if an instruction asks you to paste an unfamiliar command, it did not come from OpenAI.
GPT-6 Astra subscription: what to buy and why Russia complicates it
A ChatGPT subscription opens chat, voice, files, ChatGPT Work and Codex with its cloud features. On Plus, Astra is squeezed into the five-hour window, on Pro there is no such window. We covered the top plan separately: Where to buy Codex when Pro 20x is closed.
For Russia the problem is not the price. Russia is missing from the API supported-countries page, and ChatGPT has its own separate list in OpenAI's help center. We do not test payment with a Russian card and we do not promise it works. Building a team workflow on a subscription under that uncertainty is something we would not do. What works and what does not is described in ChatGPT 6 in Russia.
Buy GPT-6 through the API: tokens instead of a plan
The API is not tied to a plan: you top up a balance and pay for the tokens you spend. At codexkey it is one scheme for every model: a sk_cdx_... key, the address https://api.codexkey.online/v1, and payment by a Russian bank card, SBP (the Russian Faster Payments System) or crypto. No OpenAI account and no VPN.
| Catalog model | Input per 1M tokens | Output per 1M tokens | When to pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
gpt-6-astra | $0.68 | $3.3 | hard debugging, heavy refactoring |
gpt-6.1-sol | $0.28 | $1.42 | everyday development |
gpt-6-sol | $0.14 | $0.68 | the same, with a price cushion |
gpt-6-luna | $0.04 | $0.22 | bulk processing |
The codexkey price list is dated 29 October 2026; current prices are on the models page. In the OpenAI API the same models cost more: Astra $10 and $50, GPT-6.1 Sol $2 and $10, GPT-6 Luna $0.10 and $0.50 per 1M tokens.
How Astra differs from Sol and when you really need it is covered in What is GPT-6 Astra. The whole GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 range is set side by side in GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 for the API.
From Codex the model is called as described in the guide: the provider goes into config.toml, the key into auth.json or an environment variable. The key-based sign-in without a subscription is covered in Codex CLI with an API key.
Subscription or API: which fits which scenario
| Scenario | What pays off | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily chat, voice, files, search | ChatGPT subscription | the API has no ready interface |
| Code in the terminal a couple of evenings a week | API | you pay only for tokens you used |
| A full day with an agent on Astra | price both | the plan has window limits, the API bills per token |
| Integration into your own service | API | you need a key and predictable limits |
| PR review in GitHub and the Slack integration from Codex | subscription | cloud features work only with a ChatGPT sign-in |
| Labeling and summaries across thousands of documents | API, gpt-6-luna | volume and price per token |
The row about cloud features comes from the documentation. With an API-key sign-in the local features work, while Codex cloud requires signing in through ChatGPT (authentication page). The pricing page also lists GitHub review and Slack among the features missing when you work with a key.
What a month costs: a worked example
This is a calculation on our assumptions, not a measurement. An agent task: 60 000 fresh input tokens, 240 000 tokens from cache and 30 000 output tokens. A month holds 100 such tasks, which is five working tasks a day over twenty days. Prices are from the codexkey catalog of 29 October 2026:
| Model | Cost of one task | 100 tasks a month |
|---|---|---|
gpt-6-astra | $0.159 | $15.9 |
gpt-6.1-sol | $0.064 | $6.4 |
gpt-6-sol | $0.034 | $3.4 |
gpt-6-luna | $0.019 | $1.9 |
We counted fresh input at the input price, cached input at the cache-read price and output at the output price, and left cache writes out. Real agents can burn more tokens, especially on high and max. These figures cannot be compared with Plus at $20 head to head: the subscription brings an interface and cloud features, while Astra inside it is capped by the window. For occasional coding the answer is obvious. If an agent works hard every day, count on your own tokens; /status in Codex shows the current spend.
How to avoid overpaying for tokens
Four habits cut the bill without losing quality:
- Turn Astra on for a single session. Default to Sol or Luna and move up only when they fail.
- Put the unchanging part of the prompt first. A repeated prefix (instructions, files) can be read from cache: for Astra the catalog charges $0.08 per 1M tokens for a cache read against $0.68 for ordinary input.
- Cap
max_tokensand reasoning effort. Reasoning tokens are usually billed as output, and Astra output costs $3.3 per 1M. - Count the price of a solved task. A cheap model that needs three attempts sometimes costs more than an expensive one that needs one.
FAQ
Is there a way to get GPT-6 Astra for free?
No. The free ChatGPT plans give GPT-6 Luna, while Astra is available only on paid plans and through the API with per-token billing. Third-party offers of "free Astra" are best avoided: behind them can be data harvesting or an installer carrying malware, and the campaign described above is one example.
How much does a GPT-6 subscription cost?
Go costs $8 a month, Plus $20, Pro from $100, Business $20 per user on an annual contract. The prices come from the Codex pricing page of 29 October 2026. Astra is included from Plus up, but on Plus a message limit applies per five-hour window.
What does "download GPT-6 Astra" mean, and where do I get the app?
The model itself cannot be downloaded, because it runs on OpenAI servers. What you download is the ChatGPT app from chatgpt.com/download or Codex CLI. Take the installer only from the official site and never paste someone else's commands into a terminal.
Can I buy GPT-6 Astra on its own, without a subscription?
Yes, through the API: you pay for tokens with no plan. At OpenAI that is $10 per 1M input and $50 per 1M output, and in the codexkey catalog $0.68 and $3.3. For Russia the second option is more practical: payment in rubles and no OpenAI account.
Is Astra included in ChatGPT Plus?
Yes, in ChatGPT Work and Codex, with an estimate of 5-45 local messages per five hours. In ordinary chat availability may differ and shifts as the rollout continues, so check the model picker in your account.
How do I buy GPT-6 from Russia?
We do not recommend building a ChatGPT subscription on Russian payment methods: Russia is not on the list of countries for the OpenAI API. The practical route for developers is a codexkey key, topped up by a Russian card, SBP or crypto, with the models gpt-6-astra, gpt-6.1-sol and gpt-6-luna at one address.
