Your conversation history in Claude is stored by Anthropic, not by you. While the account works, getting it out is easy: a couple of clicks and an email. With a banned account there are fewer options, but some remain. Below is the procedure from Anthropic's help pages, which we opened on 2 November 2026.
How to export your data
For a personal account on the claude.ai website or in Claude Desktop:
- Open Settings and go to the Privacy section.
- Click Export data.
- Wait for the email. The export takes little time to prepare, and the download link arrives at the address on the account.
- Download the archive while you are signed in. If you sign out, the link won't open.
The link lives for 24 hours from delivery. Missed it? Repeat the same steps and a new one will arrive. The export includes your conversation data and information about the account user.
What the export can't do
- The Claude apps for iOS and Android have no export; it works only on the website and in Claude Desktop.
- The archive can't be imported into another personal Claude account. The help page states plainly that personal accounts don't pass data to each other. So the export works as a backup, not as a move.
- The help page names conversation data and account details as the contents of the export. It says nothing about Projects, memory or artifacts, so after downloading, open the archive and see what is in it. The file format isn't described either.
Team and Enterprise
On the business plans the rules are different. A member can export their own chats only if the owner has turned on the "Allow members to export their own data" setting. No Export data button? Then the setting is off, and it is worth asking the owner to check it. The export contains your chats, but not the contents of files you uploaded. The Primary Owner doesn't see the button in personal settings: they export the whole organization's data under Organization settings, then Data and privacy. If you are moving from a personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization, the help page advises moving the personal account into the organization directly rather than going through an export.
If the account is banned
Anthropic's help page on warnings and appeals says that even with a ban you can sign in to claude.ai to export your data or delete the account. The caveat matters: the scope of the export may be limited depending on which Usage Policy violation you are charged with. Which data you will be able to take can't be known in advance.
An appeal is filed from the banned account at claude.ai/restricted, and the form opens only after sign-in. Anthropic promises no response times, and they are currently longer than usual. Bans and appeals are covered in detail in Claude account banned. How Anthropic's regional policy treats signing in to an account from Russia, we don't comment on: that is a question for a lawyer or for the company itself. What is known about bans and VPNs is gathered in VPN and Claude, and the policy page itself is analysed in Does Claude work in Russia.
What to do with the archive
An export is useful only when you can actually use it. A few habits:
- Keep the archive in encrypted storage. Chats often hold keys, addresses and retellings of internal documents.
- Move the prompts you reuse from the history into a repository or into notes. The archive can't be uploaded back, but the text in it can be copied.
- For work projects, keep agent instructions in git:
CLAUDE.mdand the project's.claude/directory. The history of local Claude Code sessions sits in the configuration directory on your machine, so it has to be copied separately. Which files to save and how is described in the checklist for 12 November. - Repeat the export on a calendar, say once a quarter. The link lasts a day, so pick the time in advance.
If Claude won't open for some other reason, start with the diagnostics. To work with models without being tied to a personal account, create a separate API key, as described in Moving a project to a gateway. codexkey issues sk_cdx_... keys, the balance is topped up with a Russian bank card, through SBP (the Russian Faster Payments System) or with crypto, and calls go to https://api.claudexia.tech. The gateway doesn't replace the claude.ai site or Anthropic's subscription features, and history can't be moved from Claude into it.
