"Account not found" means Anthropic cannot match the email or sign-in method you entered to an existing active account. There are three causes: the account was deleted or blocked, you signed in with a different method than the one you registered with, or access came through an organization and was revoked. The first two usually take a few minutes to sort out. In the third case you will have to wait for an administrator or switch to a personal API key.
What the "account not found" error means
A wrong password is caught when your credentials are checked. This error appears earlier: the system finds no record tied to the identifier you typed at all. Technically that is one of three situations. No record ever existed under this email. A record existed but was deleted. Or you are signing in with a method other than the one you used to create the account.
The error looks the same whether it is a first sign-up with a typo in the email or an attempt to enter an account deleted months ago. The message does not name the reason, so you have to work it out from the circumstances.
The account was deleted or blocked by Anthropic
You clearly remember signing in with this email before, and now you see "account not found". Most likely the account was deleted. There are two ways that happens.
You requested the deletion yourself. Under GDPR or CCPA a user is entitled to ask for complete erasure of their data. Once the request is processed, the account and the whole conversation history are wiped with no way to bring them back. If you sent such a request, or someone with access to the account did, that explains the error.
Anthropic deleted the account in an abuse cleanup. With a temporary suspension, or even a permanent ban, the account record stays. A full deletion erases the data entirely and follows confirmed, serious violations of the terms of use. All the restriction types, from temporary suspension to deletion, are covered in Claude account banned or blocked.
In both cases this particular account cannot be recovered. A new one with the same email usually goes through without trouble, provided the old one was deleted on request and not banned for a violation.
You signed in with the wrong method
This cause is easy to miss. Anthropic supports several sign-in methods: email with a verification code, a Google account and corporate SSO. Say you registered through Google and now type your email directly. The system will not find a match, even though the account exists and works perfectly.
Check the following:
- Whether you are entering the right address. Typos and alternate domains count too (for example, an old work email instead of your personal one).
- Whether you clicked "Continue with Google" at sign-up instead of typing an email.
- Whether you have several accounts with similar addresses, created at different times.
If you are unsure, try each available sign-in method in turn before you conclude the account was deleted.
Access came through an organization and was revoked
The account may have been created or linked through a work organization in the Anthropic Console. In that case an administrator could have removed you from the organization or closed it entirely. Your personal login, which used to go through the organization's SSO, then stops finding a record, because the link to the organization is cut.
Do not confuse this with the Claude Code error about an organization's disabled subscription. There the account is found, and only the subscription access is switched off. "Account not found" in an organization scenario means something more drastic: the link to the organization itself has been removed. If that is your case, contact the administrator directly, since only they can see the member list and the reason you were removed.
How to keep working through codexkey
While you sort things out with Anthropic (or if you decide not to bother and set up a new entry point to the same models), Claude is available through a separate codexkey API key. It has no connection to your old claude.ai account.
import anthropic
client = anthropic.Anthropic(
api_key="sk_cdx_YOUR_KEY",
base_url="https://api.codexkey.online",
)
message = client.messages.create(
model="claude-sonnet-5",
max_tokens=1024,
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)
Claude Code is set up through the environment variables ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_*, and no claude.ai sign-in is needed at all. Step-by-step instructions for each OS are in Claude Code in Russia 2026. Signing up with codexkey takes about a minute and does not check whether you ever had an Anthropic account or what happened to it. You can top up from 1 dollar, model rates are collected on the pricing page, and payment options from Russia, including SBP (the Russian Faster Payments System) and a Russian bank card, are described in How to pay for Claude from Russia.
FAQ
Can I register a new account with the same email after "account not found"?
If the account was deleted at your own request, signing up again with the same email usually goes through without obstacles. If Anthropic deleted it for a ToS violation, registering again breaks the rules, and you can be banned again if it is detected.
How do I find out whether an account was deleted or just blocked?
There is no way to check someone else's status directly. A blocked account usually shows a suspension or ban message when you sign in, not "account not found": that error points specifically to a missing record. If you are unsure, write to support@anthropic.com, give your email and ask them to confirm the status.
Why did the error appear right after I changed my password?
Changing a password does not delete an account by itself. But if the email was changed at the same time, or account recovery went wrong, the data could have fallen out of sync. Try signing in with the email that was on file before the password change.
I have never used Claude, but I get this error when I try to register. Is that normal?
Yes, if you are entering your email on the sign-in screen instead of the sign-up screen and have mixed the two up. Make sure you are on the form for creating a new account, not the login form: in claude.ai they look similar.
What if my organization closed entirely and my access was revoked with it?
Most likely you never had a standalone account: you signed in only through the organization's SSO. There is one way forward. Ask the former administrator to export your data, if they are still reachable, and create a personal account or an API key independent of the company.
Do I lose my conversation history if I move to codexkey?
Yes. Conversation history in claude.ai and work through a codexkey API key live in different systems, and data cannot be moved between them. codexkey gives you access to the same Claude models, but not to the archive of your old conversations on claude.ai.
