A Russian virtual card will not pay for Claude: Anthropic refuses it just as it refuses an ordinary card from a Russian bank. A foreign one sometimes passes, but you hand over documents, pay for issuing and upkeep, and live with the risk of a frozen account. If what you need is the Claude models themselves, not a claude.ai subscription, API access with no card is simpler.
Why virtual cards from Russian banks do not pass
Anthropic takes payments through Stripe, and Stripe cuts off cards by the number range (BIN) assigned to the issuing bank. A virtual card is no different from a plastic one here: it carries the same BIN as its bank. If a Russian bank issued the card, Stripe sees a Russian BIN and stops the payment, physical card or virtual.
The rule covers every virtual card from a Russian bank, MTS Bank (a Russian mobile operator's bank) and Ozon Bank among them. They are declined as an ordinary Russian card. They are not a separate risk category.
Foreign virtual cards: how they work
Services that issue virtual cards to non-residents usually ask you to confirm your identity and fund the card from their own balance or by bank transfer. After that the merchant sees an ordinary card from a foreign bank, and in some cases the payment to Anthropic goes through.
But "sometimes passes" is not "works reliably." There is also a basic restriction: the Anthropic supported regions policy speaks about people who are physically located in an unsupported region. A foreign bank's card does not change that. There are three separate risks to know about in advance.
Fees
Issuing and maintaining such a card is almost always paid. The fee is hidden either in the conversion rate or in a separate charge for the card and for each top-up. The final overpayment depends on the service and changes faster than any article with figures can keep up, so only the tariff on the chosen service's site shows the real size. Read it before you open a card.
Identity checks (KYC)
Most of these services ask for a passport before they issue a card, and sometimes proof of address too. That is standard practice, driven by anti-money-laundering rules, not the whim of one company. If you are not ready to hand documents to a third-party service, a virtual card is not for you in the first place.
Freezes and lost money
An account with a virtual card can be frozen if the data looks inconsistent: the card's country does not match the country you log in from, a payment goes somewhere the card is not usually used, or the platform itself changes its policy toward certain regions. How it plays out depends on the service's terms, but money on the card's balance in that situation is not always returned quickly, and sometimes not returned at all. Before you open a card, read separately what the service promises when an account is frozen, and do not trust general assurances from support.
Why you should not fake the country or the data
The temptation to settle it in one line, by entering a foreign country when you register the card or the account, is real. But that breaks the terms with several parties at once: the bank that issued the card, the payment system and Anthropic itself. The consequences are heavier than one failed transaction: a frozen account with someone else's money inside, a blocked Claude account with no way to appeal, and for banking products, questions from the bank about the nature of your transactions.
If your account is already blocked after such an attempt, our guide to a banned or blocked Claude account covers what to do next.
The no-card alternative: Claude API through codexkey
If what you need is not a "claude.ai subscription" but "access to the Claude models," you need no card at all. codexkey works as an API gateway: you register, top up your balance in rubles through SBP (the Russian Faster Payments System), a Russian card or crypto, and get a key like sk_cdx_... that works with the Anthropic SDK.
import anthropic
client = anthropic.Anthropic(
api_key="sk_cdx_your_key",
base_url="https://api.codexkey.online",
)
message = client.messages.create(
model="claude-sonnet-5",
max_tokens=1024,
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)
Claude Code takes a few environment variables, with no claude.ai login and no card:
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.codexkey.online
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=sk_cdx_your_key
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL="claude-opus-5-5[1m]"
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL="claude-sonnet-5[1m]"
export ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL="claude-sonnet-5"
The ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_* lines are required: without them Claude Code asks for its own default models and answers "There's an issue with the selected model". Instructions for different operating systems are in the Claude Code setup guide for Russia. Top-ups start from $1, and the funds arrive after the payment is confirmed. Every payment method, and a rundown of what works from Russia at all, is in how to pay for Claude from Russia. If you hold an MTS Bank card, top up your balance with it by following the separate guide. We sell API access. We do not sell Claude Pro or Max subscriptions.
FAQ
How do you pay for Claude with a virtual card from Russia?
A virtual card from a Russian bank will not pass: Anthropic declines it as an ordinary Russian card. A foreign virtual card sometimes passes, but it does not settle the location question and risks a freeze. If you need the models and not the chat, it is simpler to top up a codexkey balance through SBP or a Russian card and pay for tokens.
Can you use a Russian bank's virtual card to pay for Claude?
No. Anthropic declines it the same way as an ordinary Russian card, because the BIN of the virtual card belongs to the same Russian bank.
What does a foreign virtual card put at risk?
Three things: a paid fee for issuing and upkeep, a mandatory identity check before issuing, and a frozen account when the data looks inconsistent. After a freeze, the money on the card's balance cannot always be recovered quickly.
Do you need an identity check for a foreign virtual card?
As a rule, yes. Services that issue such cards usually ask for a passport and sometimes proof of address before issuing. Anti-money-laundering law requires it, and the company has no say.
Can you simply enter another country when registering the card or the account?
You should not. It breaks the rules of the bank and the payment system and Anthropic's terms of use all at once, and the consequences for the account and the money on the card can be worse than one failed payment.
How do you pay for Claude with no card at all?
With a codexkey API key. You top up the balance through SBP, a Russian card or cryptocurrency, and the key plugs into Claude Code, Cursor or any SDK compatible with the Anthropic API, and no Anthropic card is needed.
Can you find out beforehand whether a particular foreign card will pass at Anthropic?
There is no reliable way to check in advance: a payment either goes through or is declined at the moment of paying, and Anthropic's and Stripe's policy toward particular countries and banks can change without notice. That is one reason paying through an API gateway in rubles is more predictable.
