Card declined? Payment options step by step: How to pay for Claude from Russia.
The card works, the money is in the account, and the Claude subscription still will not go through. The error comes back instantly, with no confirmation step.
Start with the mechanics. They decide which workaround makes any sense at all.
Where the payment breaks
Anthropic takes payments through Stripe. Cards issued by Russian banks are blocked at BIN level. The BIN is the first few digits of the number, and it identifies the issuing bank.
So the decline happens before the request reaches Anthropic. The service never saw your card and made no decision about it.
The practical upshot: there is no point arguing with Anthropic support. They did not decline the payment.
Why a VPN does not solve it
"I'll turn on a VPN and it will work" runs into the same mechanics. A VPN swaps your IP, but the BIN stays what it was: the card number goes to the payment system untouched.
It can get worse. When the IP country and the card country differ, the risk score goes up on its own. A VPN without a foreign card does not help, and sometimes it hurts.
What the options are
A foreign virtual card. It works, but you have to issue and top it up, and there is usually a fee at each step. The card can also stop being serviced at any moment, and you find out on the day the subscription is charged.
Someone else's account, or an intermediary for a one-off payment. Unreliable: your access to the account is partial, and if something breaks, the fix goes through a third party.
A gateway that takes payment from Russia. You pay in rubles the usual way, and requests reach the models through a service that already has access. No Anthropic account is needed at all.
What changes when there is no Anthropic account
This is not a way around the card block. It is a different arrangement. There is nothing to restrict, because there is no account. There is nothing to renew with a foreign card, because there is no subscription. Nobody requires the IP country to match the card country.
You work with your own key and your own balance. To Anthropic, this is gateway traffic, not yours.
How it works in codexkey
Payment: SBP (the Russian Faster Payments System), Russian bank cards, MTS (the Russian mobile operator), YooKassa, Platega, crypto. Top-ups start at one dollar, and the balance does not expire.
Access: the same Claude models and the same API format. It works with Claude Code, Cursor and any SDK that lets you set your own base URL.
You can try it without spending anything: joining our Telegram channel credits a dollar to your balance. That is enough to run real requests and measure the speed.
In short
The decline comes from the payment processor, not from Anthropic, so neither a VPN nor a support ticket will lift it. Two paths remain: a foreign card with all its risks, or an arrangement where you do not need an Anthropic account at all.
