"Your account has been suspended" means Anthropic has temporarily restricted sign-in to your claude.ai account: one of its safety systems fired, on region, on a payment, on VPN detection or on a usage pattern. It is not a final ban, and in most cases access comes back after a review. You do not have to stop working in the meantime: Claude models are available without an Anthropic account, through an API gateway.
What "your account has been suspended" means
A suspension sits between normal operation and a permanent ban. Anthropic's safety system judged the account suspicious and closed sign-in until a manual or automatic review. Unlike deletion, your data and conversation history stay where they are: once the flag is lifted, everything returns.
You see the message when you try to sign in to claude.ai. If you work through the API, a suspension looks different: requests start returning 403 Forbidden with a mention of account status, and there is no text message in a UI.
Why Anthropic suspends accounts
Region. Claude.ai is officially unavailable in a number of countries, including Russia and Belarus. If IP geolocation points to a restricted region, the system can close sign-in without warning, even when you registered from another country.
VPN and proxy. Anthropic actively detects traffic from datacenter ranges typical of VPN providers. IP rotation often becomes the trigger, especially a sharp change of country between sessions. The trouble is that the account may have worked for months without complaint, and then a single server switch cuts access at once.
Payment problems. An expired card, a failed charge, a chargeback through your bank: any of these can lead to a billing suspension, and after it a sign-in suspension.
Suspicious activity. A sharp jump in request volume, dozens of parallel sessions, signs of automation through the web interface instead of the API. Automatic filters catch all of this, and false positives happen regularly.
How long a suspension lasts
According to Anthropic's documentation, temporary suspensions are lifted after review, usually within 24 hours to 14 days. The community reports longer waits: 2-4 weeks is not unusual, especially when the cause is unclear even to Anthropic and needs a manual look.
A lot depends on the type of trigger. A payment suspension usually clears fastest: a couple of days is enough after you update the card. Suspected automation or a regional flag needs a longer manual review.
How to appeal to Anthropic
- Check your email, including the spam folder: the suspension notice usually arrives within a day.
- Write down the exact error text and, if access was through the API, the HTTP response code.
- Email
support@anthropic.comwith the subjectAccount Appeal: [your email]. - In the body, give your account email, the exact wording of the error and a short description of how you use Claude. If there was unusual activity, explain it (for example, a trip and an IP change).
- Do not send several emails in a row. The reply will not come faster, and processing will slow down, because each new message can open a separate ticket.
Do not write aggressively and do not embellish how you used the service: Anthropic has full request logs, and any mismatch with your account of events will only drag the review out.
How to keep working while the account is frozen
For most people, waiting weeks for a support reply is not an option when a workflow depends on access. codexkey gives you access to Claude models (Sonnet, Opus) through a separate API gateway, with no claude.ai sign-in and no Anthropic account at all. A suspension of your personal account does not affect the gateway: you work with a codexkey key that has no connection to your status at Anthropic.
Connecting takes one line of code:
import anthropic
client = anthropic.Anthropic(
api_key="sk_cdx_YOUR_KEY",
base_url="https://api.codexkey.online",
)
message = client.messages.create(
model="claude-sonnet-5",
max_tokens=1024,
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)
For Claude Code the same is done through the environment variables ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_*. The steps for Windows, macOS and Linux are laid out in Claude Code in Russia 2026. If the suspension is about paying from Russia and not about a regional flag, working payment options, including SBP (the Russian Faster Payments System) and a Russian bank card, are covered in How to pay for Claude from Russia. Rates and the minimum top-up of 1 dollar are collected on the pricing page.
If the suspension later grows into a permanent ban, the types of blocks and the recovery steps are described in a separate guide, Claude account banned or blocked.
FAQ
How many suspensions can I get before the account is banned for good?
Anthropic publishes no formal limit. In practice, repeated suspensions for the same reason, especially after an explicit warning in your correspondence with support, raise the risk of a permanent ban. A single isolated suspension is usually lifted with no lasting consequences.
Does a VPN affect the suspension decision if I no longer use it?
A VPN in your connection history does not suspend an account after the fact. The trigger fires at the moment your IP changes to a datacenter range. If you stopped using the VPN and sign in from a stable address, a repeat is less likely. That will not automatically lift a suspension that is already in place.
Can I use the Claude API while claude.ai shows a suspension?
Sometimes, if the suspension hit only web sign-in and not the whole billing account. More often the restriction covers the entire account, and API calls start returning 403 too. The simplest check is a direct test request.
What should I write in the email if the cause of the suspension is not obvious?
Describe your normal usage as concretely as you can: what tasks you run, how often, where you usually sign in from. If your IP, device or request volume changed recently, say so plainly and explain why. Vague wording reads slower and worse than concrete facts.
Does a complaint on social media speed up the review?
Sometimes mentioning @AnthropicAI on X (Twitter) does speed up a reply, but the result is unpredictable and it does not replace the official appeal by email. It makes sense to treat it as a supplement, not the main channel.
Is a suspension different from a region block?
Yes, even though the messages can look alike. A suspension is a safety-system decision after a suspicious signal, while a region block is a permanent state for IP addresses from unavailable countries. A review cannot lift it: it stays in force as long as you connect from a restricted region.
