Claude vs GigaChat and YandexGPT
TL;DR Domestic models are simpler legally and cheaper on simple tasks. Claude is stronger at code, long context and agentic scenarios. Choose by the task, not by patriotism.
If you work with Russian text and personal data, a domestic model is almost always simpler: a contract with a Russian legal entity, data stays in the country, no intermediary. We will not argue with that. Below we look at where that logic stops working and why developers still choose Claude.
Where GigaChat and YandexGPT are genuinely easier
- Legal perimeter. A contract with a Russian company, closing documents, a clear position on 152-FZ and on keeping data in the country.
- No intermediary. You pay the supplier directly, and the question "what if the gateway shuts down" never comes up.
- Russian language in simple tasks: classification, summarization, rewriting text, working with documents. The gap to Claude here is small.
- Fit with the ecosystem. If you already work in Yandex Cloud or at Sber, connecting goes faster.
Where Claude is still clearly ahead
- Agentic work with code. Claude Code, Cursor, Cline and the other tools were built for the Anthropic API, and a domestic model cannot be dropped in with one line.
- Long context. Holding a large repository in mind and reasoning over all of it is something Opus and Sonnet can do.
- Tool calling. Multi-step scenarios where the model picks the tool itself and does not fall apart at step five.
- The surroundings. Ready-made agents, SDKs, editor plugins, thousands of worked examples.
Choosing without ideology
First answer for yourself what exactly you are doing. If it is processing Russian text inside the company perimeter and the security team is watching you, take a domestic model: it is calmer and cheaper. If you write code, run agents and already have Cursor or Claude Code set up, a domestic model will not replace that work yet, and no savings will outweigh it.
Nobody says you must pick one
In many teams the setup looks like this: a domestic model takes tasks with personal data and bulk text processing, while Claude takes development and hard reasoning. codexkey serves both the Anthropic format and an OpenAI-compatible one, so the second model is connected as one more base URL, with no code rewrite.
Common questions
- Are GigaChat and YandexGPT cheaper?
- On simple text tasks, usually yes. In agentic work with code the comparison loses its meaning: a cheap model that does not finish the task ends up costing more, because you also pay with developer time.
- Can I move my Claude prompts to a domestic model?
- You can, but they will behave differently. Prompts for agentic scenarios and tool calling almost always have to be written again.
- Which is safer for data?
- A model's country of origin does not by itself prove compliance with 152-FZ. For codexkey, localization and the grounds for transfer along the chain of recipients have to be checked separately. The current information and its limits are published in the legal section.
- What if codexkey stops working?
- The balance does not expire, and code on the OpenAI-compatible format moves to another provider by changing the base URL. We deliberately did not tie you to a format of our own.
